Decreasing Problem Behavior

  1. Identify and operationally define the problem behavior.
  2. Begin data collection to determine frequency.
  3. Complete a functional assessment of the behavior. Create a hypothesis about the antecedents and consequences of the behavior.
  4. Develop and implement a treatment plan to decrease the reinforcing aspects of the consequence.
  5. Evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. If it is effective, fade the reinforcement for and generalize the desired behavior. If it is not effective, make sure the treatment was administered correctly; if so, re-evaluate the functional assessment.
